Love Your September Family Portraits | St. Louis Family Photographer
This time of year as clients are trying to decide on dates for their fall St. Louis family portraits, I usually get asked, “What do September sessions look like?” Since midwest Septembers are extremely diverse and I’ve been asked the question so many times over the years, I’ve decided to blog about it because - let’s be honest - everyone gets a better understanding with visuals.
For me, September is one of the most flexible months of the year to photograph in, in the St. Louis area. First, because of how dramatically the natural landscape changes within those 30 days as we head into fall, from intense, vivid greens to browns. And secondly, clients being able to pull together a infinite amounts of wardrobe combos due to comfortable temperatures. Want a (sweat-less) late summer vibe? Create it with a punch of color! Want autumn to shine through? Yes, you can create that too with light long sleeves, textures or darker colors! The mix of the ever-changing season and personal wardrobes makes each session super unique.
I pulled a few photos from September sessions below so that you can get a sense of what I’m talking about.
Wildflowers are still blooming and berries are abound in early to mid-September so if you’d like a pop of nature in your photos, take advantage of the colorful fields this time of year. The first set of photos show how adding a punch of color in your wardrobe can give off those late summer vibes.
Now what if I told you that session below was the same location as above but just a few weeks apart. Mind blown? Its true! Mid-to-late September, wildflowers are usually still blooming but headed to seed. The sunset keeps going down earlier and getting deeper orange as you progress into fall. Add that to this family wearing more textured, fall-ish styled clothing and BAM you have a completely different look!
Below shows once again, how a mid-September session can have all the fall vibes. Mama styled their clothes in a mix of plaids, florals and solids all in neutrals and deep tones. Have I mentioned I’m an absolute sucker for plaids and florals mixed together?! Because they are lightweight and perfect for warmer early fall temps, shorts, skirts and rompers on the kids in fall colors are always a winner!
I can’t believe I almost forgot to mention city sessions in September!! Oh my gosh, St. Louis provides the best backdrop for fall family sessions. They are perfect way to mix up your standard portraits from natural locations to something a little more funky and fun. Want murals? Check! Cool, colorful backdrops? Check! September is fantastic for putting high tops on the kids and easy slip on dresses for moms. Good gravy talk about adorable.
